When listening to Richard Dawson’s song Ogre a particular line near the end of the song struck me. In the lyrics there is a reference to a ‘ghastly doorway’ in the face of a cliff. The reason for the doorway is alluded to nowhere else in the lyrics of the song which tells the story of an unseen presence plaguing a rural community. It remains as a tantalising mystery, a hook to an unknown place. We know that the party searching for the Ogre are travelling by the coast, following the beach in pursuit of the creature. It is then that they come across this doorway into the cliff face. It stands as a portal, some kind of gateway between their reality and some other place. A place buried in a deeper mythos.
